Here we are a year on from my blog posting which referenced the Nelson Wine Club’s annual dinner where NZ wines were featured. 10 days ago we again dined at the Rata Room. This year we had Italian wines accompanying such dishes as ‘Rosemary and honey soup with crab cake’, ‘Caramelised duck breast potato gnocchi’ and ‘White chocolate panna cotta with crème anglaise & fruit coulis’.
Some of the 6 wines we enjoyed were the Pipoli Greco Fiano from Vigneti del Vulture in Basilicata, the MezzaCorona Teroldego Rotaliano Riserva from Trentino – Alto Adige, and our dessert wine – the Pellegrino Pantelleria Passito Liquoroso. This last wine is made from Zibbibo grapes grown on the tiny Italian island of Pantelleria, which is nearer Tunisia than Sicily.
A week later our wine club enjoyed a tasting of another 8 Italian wines, presented by Phil Clarke who is the owner/manager of A Touch of Italy, based in Auckland. Some of the popular wines were the Sicilian Dinari Grillo from Duca di Castelmonte, the Vesevo Aglianico from Campania, the Farnese Fantini Colline Teramane Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOCG and Vigneti del Salento’s Zolla Malvasia Nera from Puglia.
Next month we will have a highly anticipated tasting. Our club hosts a visitor from Hawkes Bay – Rod McDonald will be presenting a range from Rod McDonald Wines.
